The Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association is the professional organization of the province’s veterinarians. We are an independent, non-profit entity that is dedicated to the excellence of the veterinary profession.

The CVMA is the national and international voice for Canada’s veterinarians, providing leadership and advocacy for veterinary medicine.

World Small Animal Veterinary Association
The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) is an association of associations, whose membership is made up of veterinary organizations from all over the world, which are concerned with companion animals. Currently, there are 96 member and affiliate associations, representing over 158,000 individual veterinarians from around the globe. Their mission statement – “To advance the health and welfare of companion animals worldwide through an educated, committed and collaborative global community of veterinary peers.”

Veterinarians Without Borders
Their mission is to work for, and with communities (domestically and internationally) in need to foster the health of animals, people and the environments that sustain us. That is what they call an ecosystem approach to health. Ecohealth: one health for everyone, everywhere.

Association for Pet Obesity Prevention
The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) has launched campaigns to fight pet obesity within the veterinary medical community, veterinary schools, and state and local veterinary organizations, and has reached out to various media outlets. They are made up of dedicated veterinarians and veterinary healthcare personnel who are committed to making the lives of dogs, cats, all other animals and people healthier and more vital. APOP was founded in 2005 by veterinarian Dr. Ernie Ward, a competitive Ironman triathlete, certified personal trainer and accredited USA Triathlon coach. A key component of APOP’s mission is to develop and promote parallel weight loss programs designed to help pet owners lose weight alongside their pets.

Animal Services Agency
The Animal Services Agency Mandate:
“To promote, protect and safeguard the health of the community by establishing and maintaining an urban environment which permits the City’s human and animal populations to co-exist free of conditions which adversely affect the health, safety and enjoyment of the community. The Animal Services Agency is responsible for the enforcement of animal care and control by-laws to minimize risk in the communities served.”

City of Winnipeg Animal Bylaws
Owning a cat and dog is rewarding. Do you also know there are rules and regulations concerning your pet? This is also known as “The Responsible Pet Ownership By-Law.” By-Law NO. 92/2013 is a By-law of The City of Winnipeg to “regulate the presence of wild and domesticated animals within the City, their activities and the activities of their owners.” Impress your friends and people at parties (and avoid fines), by knowing the law. Sections 19 and 20 of this By-law come into force on January 1, 2015. New changes were implemented as of July 1, 2022.

This University of Guelph blog is put together by Drs. Scott Weese and Maureen Anderson of the Ontario Veterinary College’s Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses. It focuses on infectious diseases in pets, with a large emphasis on zoonotic diseases (diseases that can be passed to humans from other species).

Shedding light on behaviour – Dr. Sophia Yin
Dr. Sophia Yin was a world-renowned pioneer in the field of veterinary behaviour and at the forefront of a humane approach to handling and training animals that emphasizes force free positive reinforcement to reduce their fears and anxieties. Sadly, the world lost this bright light in 2014.
